This document specifies the characteristics to be measured of suspensions containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT suspensions). It includes the essential and additional characteristics of the CNT suspension, and the corresponding measurement methods.

Characteristics specific to health, environmental and safety issues are excluded from this document.

Goal or Need:

Carbon nanotubes have been attracting great interest due to their wide scope of possible applications, such as composite reinforcement material, hydrogen containers, supercapacitors, molecular sensors and scanning probe tips. Offering attractive mechanical, electric and thermal properties, carbon nanotubes could constitute a model system for evaluation of the potential to achieve a significant improvement in bulk properties by
adding nanoscale modulators at low weight percentages.

With the fact that nano-object dispersions are widely supplied nowadays, a specification for the CNT suspension instead of CNT powders should be developed, which shall facilitate the communication and commercialization between interested parties and help generate consistent performance in the final products.
