Scope:

This Technical Report reviews commonly used methods for the characterization of cellulose nanocrystals
(CNCs), including sample preparation, measurement methods and data analysis. Selected measurands that
are important for characterization of CNCs for commercial production and applications are covered.

Keywords:Cellulose nanocrystals, CNCs, measurement methods, sample preparation

Goal or Need:

Estimates from a 2013 Future Market Technology Report predict that the global
production of cellulosic nanomaterials will increase from ~400 tons/year in 2013 to ~5000 tons/year in 2020.
The North American market is predicted to be worth $250 million by 2020. Standards for characterization of
CNCs are required for material certification, MSDS requirements and calibration/traceability, all of which are
necessary for sustained commercial development and applications.
