Document Title:Nanotechnologies – Evaluation of the mean size of nano-objects in liquid dispersions by static multiple light scattering (SMLS)
url:
Scope:This Technical Specification provides guidance for the determination of the mean size of nano-objects in liquid-based dispersions using the static multiple light scattering technique. The technique is applicable to a wide range of materials and does not require dilution of concentrated samples
Keywords:nano-objects, light scattering, dispersions
Type of Document:a. Standard

Goal or Need:

Nanoparticles dispersed in liquids interact due to a variety of weak and strong forces, which can lead to aggregation or agglomeration of primary particles. The dispersion state of the suspension strongly depends on a range of parameters. As a result, the dispersion state and the apparent mean particle size and size distribution can differ from those determined during product manufacturing, storage, and processing, particularly when using measurements requiring sample dilution or extensive preparation...

Static multiple light scattering (SMLS) based methods, in contrast to other techniques, do not require sample preparation allowing, within limitations outlined in this document, direct measurement of the mean particle size in the native (as-received) state of dispersion.
