Scope:

This Technical Report explains selected terms and definitions within the ISO 80004 series of vocabulary for nanotechnologies. It sets out readily understood interpretations of science based technical terms that stay within the confines of the ISO definition. Ethical aspects of nanotechnology developments are not included in this Report.

This Technical Report defines the the principal Core Terms in plain language, using graphical aids and examples when possible.

This Technical Report (TR) offers a guide to 'nano' principal terms for those who wish to have some understanding
of the strict formal ISO definitions. This guide will be of use to non‐experts who wish to have a workable understanding of the use and applications of nanotechnology. It aims to promote understanding of nanoscience and support communication between experts who have a public‐facing role in developing and commercialising applications of nanotechnologies with the wider community, in particular consumers, and to reduce the risk of misinterpretation of terms among users.
