Document Title: | Nanotechnologies -- Considerations for the measurement of nano-objects and their aggregates and agglomerates (NOAA) in environmental matrices |
url: | https://webstore.ansi.org/Standards/ISO/ISOTR213862019 |
Scope: | This document provides some considerations for the collection of environmental samples to be analysed for manufactured NOAA, considerations to distinguish manufactured NOAA from background levels of naturally occurring nanoscale particles of the same composition, and preparation procedures to aid in the quantification of manufactured NM in environmental matrices. |
Keywords: | Nano-objects, environmental media, air, sediment, water, sampling, NOAA, |

Goal or Need: | As manufactured nano-objects, and their aggregates and agglomerates greater than 100 nm (NOAA) enter the environment via release from the manufacturing process, products that contain them or from effluent of wastewater treatment facilities that may have received nanomaterials, there is an interest in determining their concentration in the environment. Such efforts require an understanding of the occurrence of natural materials that may interfere with the analysis or skew the results, and some strategies may require unique sampling and analytical techniques peculiar to the composition of the material. |
